The engagement

Xaebs is Javier Calleja Erdmann's directing studio. It complements his broader personal portfolio at javicalleja.com, documented in the Javier Calleja — Portfolio case study. The studio site is staged at xaebs.euphemios.com for owner review: an original theater lobby with a blue neon wordmark, an intro that moves from static to neon, a DVD menu and Javier's photographed signature. This delivery covers the main menu; film pages are the next milestone.

01

The challenge

The early-2000s theater mood had to work as a usable DVD menu on desktop and phone, with ambient motion that preserves readability and keyboard access. The catalog and settings needed to come from the shared platform rather than a fixed list in the page. Festival-hold titles also needed still previews without exposing playable footage, and devices without accelerated canvas needed a usable lobby without the animation cost.

02

The approach

An original lobby plate anchors the scene, with animated lighting, grain and a localized light sweep over the neon wordmark. Scene Selection, Special Features and Set Up are native disclosures, closed by default; title previews reveal from right to left. The server renders the catalog from the Supabase platform core, with row-level security (RLS) governing access and editable ordering, featured work and front-end settings. A measured motion governor settles to a still lobby when accelerated canvas is unavailable or rendering exceeds its budget; reduced-motion preferences also preserve a calm menu. The same creator platform supplies self-hosted HLS video and password and premiere screening infrastructure, and is built to also serve the planned premiere site for Marty Frees the Dino Ghosts. That foundation is built; the Xaebs film pages that will present it are next.

Scope of work

  • Living theater-lobby DVD main menu with an original plate, blue neon wordmark, light sweep, static-to-neon intro and photographed signature
  • Scene Selection, Special Features and Set Up disclosures with keyboard access and right-to-left title-preview reveals
  • Catalog, ordering, featured title and front-end settings read from the shared Supabase core under RLS
  • Still-only lobby previews for festival-hold titles, with playable footage excluded
  • Mobile layout, reduced-motion presentation and a measured motion governor with a still-lobby fallback
  • Integration with the existing shared self-hosted video and password/premiere screening foundation

04

What we delivered

  • The main menu staged at xaebs.euphemios.com for owner review, with staging excluded from search indexing
  • An original animated lobby with default-closed DVD disclosures, neon light sweep and Javier's signature
  • A server-rendered catalog and studio-editable settings sourced from Supabase, without a deploy to change the menu data
  • Protected hover media that keeps festival-hold titles still-only in the lobby
  • A still-lobby fallback that preserves the menu and controls when canvas rendering cannot sustain full motion

The result

  1. 01

Milestone C is built and staged for owner review. Film pages are the next milestone and are not part of this delivery.

  2. 02

The studio menu reads catalog and settings from a shared creator platform whose core already provides self-hosted video and independent password and premiere screenings.

  3. 03

Festival-hold titles never expose playable footage in the lobby; the resting main menu shows the original lobby, menu and signature without film frames.

  4. 04

Production mobile Lighthouse runs in the release gate scored 95–99 for performance and 100 for accessibility.
